*I read this one in December 2016, but I’m writing the review in April 2017, as I read an arc of book 2. I read this one as an ebook. As always, this is my honest opinion.
I was a bit hesitant to read this one. From the summary, this book reads as a generic fantasy, one that I’ve read a hundred times before. But this book is so much more.
A revenge that will consume her. A love that will ruin her.
Emelina Flores has nothing. Her home in Ruina has been ravaged by war. She lacks the powers of her fellow Ruined. Worst of all, she witnessed her parents’ brutal murders and watched helplessly as her sister, Olivia, was kidnapped.
But because Em has nothing, she has nothing to lose. Driven by a blind desire for revenge, Em sets off on a dangerous journey to the enemy kingdom of Lera. Somewhere within Lera’s borders, Em hopes to find Olivia. But in order to find her, Em must infiltrate the royal family.
In a brilliant, elaborate plan of deception and murder, Em marries Prince Casimir, next in line to take Lera’s throne. If anyone in Lera discovers Em is not Casimir’s true betrothed, Em will be executed on the spot. But it’s the only way to salvage Em’s kingdom and what is left of her family.
Em is determined to succeed, but the closer she gets to the prince, the more she questions her mission. Em’s rage-filled heart begins to soften. But with her life—and her family—on the line, love could be Em’s deadliest mistake.
In a way, the plot is kind of predictable, however, the journey is a whole lot of fun. There were plot twists I didn’t see coming, characters I didn’t think I could love so much, and a desperate need for book 2.
I loved Em. I loved that she’s strong and determined, and willing to do whatever it takes to help her people. Her burning desire for revenge and the lengths she’s willing to go in order to get it are telling, and yet, you admire her tenacity. And don’t get me started on how much I love Casimir, because I will 100% not stop.
The characters in this novel are all so well developed. I was reading some highlights from the book last night, and omg I almost cried at one part and it’s simply because the characters are so well written and the dialogue is so perfect that my heart couldn’t handle it.
This is one of those books that you get so into the story you cheer out loud and scream and clap as you read. It makes you want to read the book again simply to enjoy the banter in it.
I loved this one so much, I had forgotten how much. Reading Avenged (aka book 2) last night, made me realize just how much I loved this series.
The best part is that Ruined is an Amazon Daily Deal and you can get it for $1.99. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
